In this tutorial, I will show you the steps I took to create this Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop. Have a try!

The point I would like to emphasise in the totorial is how you can achive great result by simply mixing the layer blending options and apply various filter effects.

Here is a preview of the final image for this toturial: (click to enlarge)

OK let’s get started!

To complete this tutorial, you will need the following stocks:

Font

Step 1

Create a new document sized 1200px * 600px, fill the background layer with black colour and create a new layer on top of it, grab a soft round white brush and do a single click on the position as shown below:

1 brush 500x250 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Resize this new layer with the Ctrl + T free transform tool to the lower half of the canvas, as shown below:

1 resize 500x250 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Name this layer as “back light bottom” and reduce the opacity around 20%, duplicate this layer once and move the duplicated layer up a bit, increase the opacity of the duplicated layer to 40%, we’ll have the following layered effect:

1 effect2 499x251 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Step 2

Use the font we downloaded, type some texts on top of the previous layers, a shown below:

2 type1 499x219 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Apply the following layer blending options to this layer:

Drop Shadow

2 drop sha 500x350 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Inner Shadow

Outer Glow

Inner Glow

Bevel and Emboss

2 bevel 500x350 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Contour

Color Overlay

2 col over 500x350 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Stroke

2 stroke 500x350 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

And you will  have the following effect so far:

2 effect2 500x250 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Step 3

Now we have the base text, let’s add some sparkles around the text. You may achieve this effect through filters but I prefer using a dynamic brush. Let’s grab a 3px soft brush, apply the following brush dynamics to it:

Shape Dynamics

3 sha dyn Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Scattering

3 scattering Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Save the brushset as we will be using it later on in the tutorial.

Now let’s create a new layer called “sparks” and use this brushset and paint  some dots around the text, as shown below:

3 paint 500x168 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Let’s spice up the effect by adding some motions into the text. Duplicate the “sparks” layer once, apply the following motion blur settings to it:

3 mo blur Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

And you will have the following effect so far:

3 effect 500x210 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

You can see so far we have just laying the fundation of the text effect. We will be adding more effect to it in the next few steps to touch things up.

Step 4

Create a new layer on top of all other layers called “cloud”, load the selection of the original text layer by Ctrl + left-clicking the thumbnail image on the layer palette of the text layer.

Render some cloud inside the selection on the new layer via the cloud filter:

4 render cloud 500x190 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Change the blending mode of the new cloud layer to “linear light” and drop the opacity to 80%, add the following layer mask to it:

4 cloud mask 500x246 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

And you will have the following effect so far:

4 effect 1 500x183 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Now here is an interesting trick: create a new layer called “cloud overlay”, firstly we render the whole layer with cloud, as shown below:

4 cloud 2 499x246 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Then we use the free transform tool to resize this cloud overlay layer to around the same size as the text layer:

4 cloud resize 500x245 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Change the blending mode of the cloud overlay light to “Pin Light” and drop the opacity to 50%, duplicate it once and you will have the following effect:

4 cloud pin light 500x244 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Step 5

Now we add a new color balance adjustment layer to give the text some colour boost, with the following settings:

5 col sha1 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

5 col mid1 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

5 col hig1 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

And you will have the following effect so far:

5 effect2 500x203 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

You can see by simply adding a new adjustment layer, we give the text a great look (not yet finished, though).

Step 6

Now we can create a new layer on top of the two background bottom light layers, call the layer “dots” and use the custom brushset we made for the sparkles in Step 3, adjust the brush tip size to be a bigger one, keep the colour as White, paint some small dots around the text:

6 paint small dots 499x199 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

You can always paint some big dots (with a lower flow and opacity settings), as shown below:

6 paint big dots 499x234 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

You can see because of the colour balance adjustment layer we used, those dots will become red hot automatically.

Step 7

Now we can add some more splashing effect to the text. Remember we created a “Sparkle” layer below with tiny dots? We can duplicate that layer once, apply the following Radial Blur settings to the duplicated layer:

7 radial blur Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

On the same layer, apply the following “Add noise” filter to it:

7 noise Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Resize the layer to a smaller size and position it to the centre:

7 resize 500x268 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Duplicate this layer a few more times, move the duplicated layer around, resize them to various shapes for variety, and you will have the following effect:

7 drag 500x255 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

7 effect1 500x255 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Step 8

We’re nearly there! We can flatten the image first (remember to save the layered one in a seperate file in case you want to go back), duplicate the background layer twice.

On the first duplicated layer, apply the following Smart Sharpen Filter to it:

8 smart sharpen Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

On the second duplicate layer, apply the following

8 sprayed strokes 500x338 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

and the following mask to it:

8 mask1 500x255 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

and you will have the following final effect: (click to enlarge)

sparkle fire text flattened 500x250 Design a Hot and Sparkling, Firery Text Effect in Photoshop

Ok that’s it for this tutorial! Of course you can alter the colour and add more effect it. Experiment and practices make you better.

Till next time, have a great day!

hmm you lost me at the colour balance area :( i created a new layer for it then tried to colour balance but it said that there is nothing in the layer D: could some one please explain???

  • hieronymus

M8 another great tut…… gonna do it tonight ;)

    Thumbs up !

  • http://www.porn.com bob

Ah how do i do the layer mask part >.>

  • James Qu

@bob: you can go to Layer > Layer mask or simply click on the little filled rectangle with a circle inside at the bottom of the layer palette (not sure if cs2 or lower version has this, but cs3 and cs4 definitely has this shortcut)

Once you add the mask, use the erase tool (with a soft round brush) to erase the portion as shown in the steps.

    Hope this helps.

Please, help me with Step 5. ^_^

  • http://www.psdvault.com James Qu

@DJniki4: hi there, with step 5, just add a new image adjustment layer (color balance) according to the settings shown in those screenshots.

In saying that, If you use an earlier version of Photoshop, then you won’t have this feature.

    Hope this helps.

  • http://Website wismeonk

Having problems with step 5 as i dont the option is shows up as the clouds layer being in a small box around the text and i did up past the color and same problem how did you have that layer blen in with the image IE not have it look like its in a small box just over the text

    cheers

  • http://Website Junaid Sajjad

WoW . I Love This Amazing Effect !

  • James Qu

@wisemonk: the color balance layer is an image adjustment layer added on top of the cloud layer. the colour adjustment was not applied on the cloud layer. Also check the blending mode of the cloud layer – it must be set to “Pin Light” and opacity to 50%.

    Hope this helps

  • http://Website aztyx

For the guys who have problems on step5. i think the tutorial is a bit fuzzy on that part as i myself also had some problems there.

what you guys who have this problem has done is to go “Image -> adjustments -> color balance”

when the way the tutorial creator meant is “layer -> new adjustment layer -> color balance”

I also got the problem with the cloud overlay becoming like a “box”. anyway, awesome tutorial.

    best regards, aztyx

    Very nice toturial indeed!

BUT, im a amature in photoshop and i dont understand step 4.
I can change the blending mode “linear light” and drop the opacity to 80% and it works fine but i dont understand how to add the layer mask.

Do i place the picture as a layer or is the picture just a illustration?

I use CS5 and have the add layer mask option, Ill be grateful for any help given.

    Thanks

  • http://Website Caleb

    One additional question.

Is there a way to make a layer that ends the Color balance so that the layes beneath doesent recive the effect?

    Explanation:

    —————————-
    Color Balance Layer
    —————————-
    Normal Layer (with color balance)
    —————————-
Color Balance Layer (that ends the effect)
    —————————-
    Normal Layer (wihtout color balance)
    —————————-

Kinda goofy way to ask sorry about that but my english is poor :p
