<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the steps I took to create this Grungy Style Artwork, Mixing with Great Lighting and Shattered Effect in Photoshop. This is an intermediate level tutorial and some steps can be tricky, but why not just have a try :)</p>
<p>Along the way, we will cover creating shattered/disintegration effect, lighting effect, how to generate more depth to your image, as well as using Pen Tool to create awesome abstract lines. This tutorial is also a great opportunity to practice your brush painting skills.</p>
<p>Here is the preview of the final effect I have for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/model-abstract-flattened-3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4627" title="model-abstract-flattened-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/model-abstract-flattened-3-500x500.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" /></a></p>
<p>Alternatvie version with different colour scheme: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/model-abstract-flattened-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4626" title="model-abstract-flattened-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/model-abstract-flattened-2-500x500.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" /></a></p>

<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/vip/signup.php"><img title="vip-sign-up-250" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/vip-sign-up-250.png" alt="" width="250" height="250" /></a></p>
<p>Ok let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<p>To complete this tutorial, you will need to the following stocks:</p>
<p><a href="http://flex-flex.deviantart.com/art/Free-Stock-Gabrielle-2-148163380" target="_blank">Female Model</a></p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Create a new document sized 1000px * 1000px, fill the background with black colour. Create a new layer on top of the background called &#8220;grunge texture&#8221;, download a choice of your grungy brushset from sites such as <a href="http://qbrushes.net/" target="_blank">qbrushes.net</a> or <a href="http://www.brusheezy.com/" target="_blank">brusheezy.com</a>, load it into Photoshop, and use them to paint a light-grey background on this texture layer, as shown below: (make sure you set the flow and opacity of the brush to a low level, around 20-30%)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4629" title="1 paint" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/1-paint-500x494.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="494" /></p>
<p>Once you&#8217;re happy with the texture, duplicate this layer once, and resize the duplicated layer as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4630" title="1 resize" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/1-resize-500x497.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="497" /></p>
<p>Now here is a trick you can use to quickly add some depth to the image &#8211; after resizing the image, don&#8217;t cancel the selection, straight-away right-click and choose &#8220;perspective&#8221;, as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4631" title="1 pers" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/1-pers.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="299" /></p>
<p>Perspective your selection as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4632" title="1 pers 2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/1-pers-2-500x297.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="297" /></p>
<p>Erase the upper edge this layer as shown below, so the two layers can sort of blend together:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4633" title="1 erase" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/1-erase-500x488.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="488" /></p>
<p>And you can by doing so, we add depth to the background texture so making it easier to add the model onto the canvas later on:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4634" title="1 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/1-effect-499x494.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="494" /></p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Load the Female Model stock image into Photoshop, use whatever method you like to extract the gril out, copy and paste her onto our canvas, resize and position it as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4635" title="2 paste" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-paste-500x498.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="498" /></p>
<p>Name this layer as &#8220;model&#8221;.</p>
<p>Apply the following Smart Sharpen filter on this model layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4636" title="2 smart sharpen" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-smart-sharpen-500x309.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="309" /></p>
<p>Add the following three adjustment layers on to this layer, make sure to tick the &#8220;use preivew layer as clipping mask&#8221; option:</p>
<p>Black and white</p>
<blockquote><p>Make sure to change the blending mode of this Black and White layer to &#8220;Vivid Light&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4637" title="2 bw" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-bw.jpg" alt="" width="210" height="336" /></p>
<p>Curves</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4638" title="2 curves" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-curves.jpg" alt="" width="210" height="336" /></p>
<p>Vibrance</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4639" title="2 vib" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-vib.jpg" alt="" width="210" height="336" /></p>
<p>and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4641" title="2 effect 1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-effect-1.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="700" /></p>
<p>duplicate the orginal model and drag the duplicated layer to the top, apply the following Spatter filter to it: (Filter &gt; Brush Stroke &gt; Spatter)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4642" title="2 spatter" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-spatter-500x344.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="344" /></p>
<p>You will now see the whole girl image is covered by the shattered piece &#8211; of course we don&#8217;t want that. So add the following layer mask to hide those parts we don&#8217;t wish to see:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4643" title="2 blend mask" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-blend-mask-500x503.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="503" /></p>
<p>By doing so, we only leave the shoulder and the upper legs part to have shattered effect.</p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode of this layer to &#8220;Hard Light&#8221;, and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4640" title="2 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/2-effect.jpg" alt="" width="359" height="516" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Duplicate the original model layer once more and drag it on top of all previous layers. Apply the following motion blur settings to it:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4644" title="3 motion blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/3-motion-blur.jpg" alt="" width="309" height="346" /></p>
<p>Add the following mask to the motion blur layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4645" title="3 mask" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/3-mask-500x467.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="467" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode this layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221;, you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4646" title="3 mo blur 2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/3-mo-blur-2-500x586.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="586" /></p>
<p>Optionally, you can duplicate this motion blur layer a few more times, and drag them around the model&#8217;s body for more effect.</p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Now let&#8217;s create some abstract lines. Firstly turn off all previous layers (except the background grungy texture layer) we made so that we have more space to use our creativity. Create a new layer above the grungy texture layer, grab the Pen Tool and draw a path as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4647" title="4 draw" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4-draw-500x417.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="417" /></p>
<p>Stroke the path as shown below with a 3-5px soft brush: (You can choose any colour you like)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4648" title="4 stroke pa" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4-stroke-pa.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="442" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4649" title="4 simulate" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4-simulate.jpg" alt="" width="457" height="204" /></p>
<p>You will have the following effect or similar:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4650" title="4 after strok" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4-after-strok.jpg" alt="" width="494" height="322" /></p>
<p>After stroking the path, duplicate it once and apply the following Gaussian Blur settings to it:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4651" title="4 gau blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4-gau-blur.jpg" alt="" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>You will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4652" title="4 duplicate" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4-duplicate.jpg" alt="" width="460" height="285" /></p>
<p>You can see by doing so we add a glowing effect to the abstract line we created.</p>
<p>To futher enhance this layer, we merge this two layers, duplicate the merge layer once, and change the blending mode to &#8220;Vivid Light&#8221;, you will have the following effect: (I resized this line a bit):</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4653" title="4 effect vivid" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4-effect-vivid.jpg" alt="" width="432" height="423" /></p>
<p>That&#8217;s all for create the abstract line. Then we can simply duplicate, position those lines around the model, as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4654" title="4 effect 3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4-effect-3.jpg" alt="" width="446" height="588" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>Now we can add a bit of shadow for the model because I intend to have light coming from the top. So we simply create a new layer called &#8220;shadow&#8221; just below the original model layer, grab a soft black brush, paint some shadow on the bottom:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4655" title="5 paint shadow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-paint-shadow-500x321.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="321" /></p>
<p>Create a new layer, use the grungy brushset you donwloaded or choose a different brushset, paint some grungy texture around the model&#8217;s body, as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4656" title="5 grunge texture" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-grunge-texture-500x512.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="512" /></p>
<p>This step can be a bit tricky to complete &#8211; try mixing different brushes in the set, set the opacity and flow to a low level around 30-40%, and use the tip mentioned in the screenshot. It&#8217;s all about getting used to the brushset and find the feeling :)</p>
<p>Once you finish the painting, duplicate this layer once, apply the following Motion Blur setting to it:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4657" title="5 mo blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-mo-blur.jpg" alt="" width="307" height="334" /></p>
<p>and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4658" title="5 after mo blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-after-mo-blur-500x513.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="513" /></p>
<p>Add the following three adjustment layer on top of it, with respective layer masks:</p>
<p>Curves</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4659" title="5 curves" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-curves.jpg" alt="" width="210" height="336" /></p>
<p>Curves Mask (Use Eraser with Grungy Brushset, along with soft round brush to create this effect)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4660" title="5 curve mask" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-curve-mask-499x500.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="500" /></p>
<p>Levels</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4661" title="5 levels" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-levels.jpg" alt="" width="210" height="336" /></p>
<p>Levels Mask</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4662" title="5 levels mask" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-levels-mask-500x498.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="498" /></p>
<p>Color Balance</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4663" title="5 col bal" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-col-bal.jpg" alt="" width="210" height="336" /></p>
<p>You will have the following effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4664" title="5 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-effect-499x497.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="497" /></p>
<h3>Step 6</h3>
<p>Now let&#8217;s add some final touch-up for the image. To do this, I decided to use Len Flare + Cloud Filter to add some highlight to the model&#8217;s body.</p>
<p>The trick is really simple: Create a new layer on top of all previous layers, use the Lasso Tool (with 25px feather) to create a selection, render some cloud inside it then apply the following Lens Flare settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4665" title="5 lens filter" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/5-lens-filter.jpg" alt="" width="310" height="400" /></p>
<p>and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4666" title="6 lens flare" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/6-lens-flare.jpg" alt="" width="401" height="256" /></p>
<p>We then change the layer blending mode to &#8220;overlay&#8221;, &#8220;color dodge&#8221; or &#8220;vivid light&#8221;, totally up to you. Make sure you duplicate this layer a few times, and move them around the model&#8217;s body for more highlights.</p>
<p>Below image shows the areas I chose to highlight: (I turn off color so you can see the arrows a bit better)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4667" title="6 light effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/6-light-effect-500x548.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="548" /></p>
<p>Important: experiment with layer blending mode with this cloud filter + lens flare layer, you will be amazed how interesting this combination would bring you :)</p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4668" title="6 effect 2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/6-effect-2-500x486.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="486" /></p>
<h3>Final Step</h3>
<p>For this final step, I flatten the image, smart sharpen it a bit, changed the color scheme and adjusted the brightness and contrast as well. I will leave those settings up to you so you can experiment with them :)</p>
<p>Here is the final effect for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/model-abstract-flattened-31.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4673" title="model-abstract-flattened-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/model-abstract-flattened-31-500x500.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" /></a></p>
<p>Alternative version: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/model-abstract-flattened-21.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4671" title="model-abstract-flattened-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/model-abstract-flattened-21-500x500.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" /></a></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it! Hope you enjoy this tutorial! Drop me a comment if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out!</p>

<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/vip/signup.php"><img title="vip-sign-up-250" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/vip-sign-up-250.png" alt="" width="250" height="250" /></a></p>
<p>OK let’s get started!</p>
<p>To complete this tutorial, you will need the following stocks:</p>
<p><a href="http://quiccs.deviantart.com/art/Amputa-Bangiz-Standard-TTF-122444794" target="_blank">Font</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.brushking.eu/287/valley-of-the-dry-bones-3.html" target="_blank">Brushset</a></p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Create a new document sized 1200 * 1700px, fill the background layer with black colour. Create a new layer on top of it and grab the brushset we just downloaded and paint some grungy texture as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3628" title="1 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/1-effect1-486x700.jpg" alt="1 effect" width="486" height="700" /></p>
<p>The trick here is to set your brush flow and opacity to a reletively low level, both around 30% &#8211; 40%, and vary the brushset size when you paint. Also don&#8217;t stick with one brushset, try mixing different ones together and see what result that brings you.</p>
<p>If you want to skip this step, you can simply download a copy of this background texture <a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/bg-grungy-texture.jpg" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>Now we want to make a space for our text and create some depth for the image. To do so, on the texture layer, add the following layer mask to it:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3630" title="1 mask" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/1-mask-490x700.jpg" alt="1 mask" width="490" height="700" /></p>
<p>To adjust the lighting contrast a bit, we can add a Curves adjustment layer on top of all previous layers:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3632" title="1 curves" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/1-curves.jpg" alt="1 curves" width="471" height="446" /></p>
<p>and here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3631" title="1 effect 2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/1-effect-2-492x700.jpg" alt="1 effect 2" width="492" height="700" /></p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Use the font we download before, type and position the text as shown below: (Use a dark gray colour as font colour)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3633" title="2 type" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/2-type-500x696.jpg" alt="2 type" width="500" height="696" /></p>
<p>Tips: type the texts on seperate layers, use the free transform tool (Ctrl + T) to rotate and fit them together.</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;re happy with the position, rasterise and merge those text layers and apply the following layer blending option to the merged layer:</p>
<p>Drop Shadow</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3634" title="2 drop sha" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/2-drop-sha-500x350.jpg" alt="2 drop sha" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Bevel and Emboss</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3635" title="2 bevel" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/2-bevel-500x350.jpg" alt="2 bevel" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Gradient Overlay</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3636" title="2 gradient" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/2-gradient-500x350.jpg" alt="2 gradient" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3637" title="2 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/2-effect2-495x700.jpg" alt="2 effect" width="495" height="700" /></p>
<p>Now we&#8217;re in the fun part of this tutorial &#8211; Duplicate this merged text layer five times, and set each layer&#8217;s opacity as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3638" title="2 type opacity" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/2-type-opacity.jpg" alt="2 type opacity" width="427" height="237" /></p>
<p>Use your <strong>up and right arrow key</strong> on your keyboard, repeatly type them until each layer seperates from each other and form this effect as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3639" title="2 effect 2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/2-effect-21-497x700.jpg" alt="2 effect 2" width="497" height="700" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Load the selection of the last text layer (hold ctrl + left-click the thumbnail image of that text layer on the layer pallette), and apply the following refine edge settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3640" title="refine edge" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/refine-edge.jpg" alt="refine edge" width="328" height="463" /></p>
<p>Maintain the selection, create a new layer called &#8220;cloud&#8221; and render some cloud in it: (Black and White colour)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3641" title="3 render cloud" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/3-render-cloud-499x698.jpg" alt="3 render cloud" width="499" height="698" /></p>
<p>Duplicate this cloud layer three times, and drag the last text layer on top of the duplicated cloud layer, you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3642" title="3 drag layer up" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/3-drag-layer-up-495x700.jpg" alt="3 drag layer up" width="495" height="700" /></p>
<p>Duplicate the cloud layer twice, and drag the two layers on top of text layer, change their blending mode to &#8220;overlay&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3643" title="3 effect 2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/3-effect-2-500x697.jpg" alt="3 effect 2" width="500" height="697" /></p>
<h4>Step 4</h4>
<p>Now we can add some colours onto the image to spice it up a bit. To do this, I simply create a new layer called &#8220;colour 1&#8243; on top of all previous layers, and grab a big soft round brush and select some colour I like to paint over it:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3644" title="4 paint" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/4-paint1-490x700.jpg" alt="4 paint" width="490" height="700" /></p>
<p>Change the blending mode of this layer to &#8220;overlay&#8221;.</p>
<p>I also want to highlight the edge of the grungy background, so I add another layer called &#8220;colour 2&#8243; and grab a brown colour brush to paint around the edges:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3645" title="4 paint 2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/4-paint-2-499x700.jpg" alt="4 paint 2" width="499" height="700" /></p>
<p>Set the blending mode of this layer to &#8220;colour dodge&#8221;.</p>
<p>You can also highlight some part of the text, simply create another layer called &#8220;highlight&#8221; and grab a white soft round, big size brush and paint over desired area:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3646" title="4 paint 3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/4-paint-3-500x693.jpg" alt="4 paint 3" width="500" height="693" /></p>
<p>Change thie blending mode of this layer to &#8220;soft light&#8221;.</p>
<p>For final refinement, I added two adjustment layers on top of all previous layers:</p>
<p>Curves</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3648" title="4 curves" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/4-curves.jpg" alt="4 curves" width="471" height="446" /></p>
<p>Colour balance</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3649" title="4 col bal" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/4-col-bal.jpg" alt="4 col bal" width="437" height="224" /></p>
<p>Apply the following mask to the colour balance adjustment layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3650" title="4 mask col bal" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/4-mask-col-bal-493x700.jpg" alt="4 mask col bal" width="493" height="700" /></p>
<p>Overall, you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3647" title="4 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/4-effect2-494x700.jpg" alt="4 effect" width="494" height="700" /></p>
<p>Ok that&#8217;s pretty much it for this tutorial! Of course this doesn&#8217;t stop you from enhancing it and put it some your own creativity to it.</p>
<p>I further added some lines and apply some of <a href="http://qbrushes.com/objects/retro-funk-2-brushes/" target="_blank">this brushset </a>around the edge of the text.</p>
<p>Here is my final effect for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/glossy-geo-typo-flatten-final.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3651" title="glossy-geo-typo-flatten-final" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/glossy-geo-typo-flatten-final-496x700.jpg" alt="glossy-geo-typo-flatten-final" width="496" height="700" /></a></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it for this tut! Hope you enjoy this tutorial and find it useful and inspirational! Cheers and have a great day!</p>

<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the processes involved in creating this Horror Looking, Extreme Grungy Style Poster in Photoshop.</p>
<p>Along the way, we will be using Photoshop techniques such as the Extract filter, layer blending effects, masking, a variety of photo filtering tools and image adjustment tools. I would like to put emphasis towards the Extract Filter and show you what you can do with the tool when it comes to complex selection (e.g. hair selection).</p>
<p>This is an intermediate tutorial and can be a bit tricky, but why not have a try :)</p>
<p>Here is a preview of my final effect:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/horror-grungy-poster-final.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2621" title="horror-grungy-poster-final" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/horror-grungy-poster-final-500x666.jpg" alt="horror-grungy-poster-final" width="500" height="666" /></a></p>

<h3>PSD File Download</h3>
<p>You can download the PSD File for this tutorial via the VIP Members Area for only $4.95/Month (or less)! <p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/vip/signup.php"><img title="vip-sign-up-250" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/vip-sign-up-250.png" alt="" width="250" height="250" /></a></p>
<p>OK let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<p>To complete this tutorial, you will need the following stocks:</p>
<p><a href="http://sweettradestock.deviantart.com/art/Wedding-Skirt-Stock-122137269" target="_blank">Wedding Skirt Stock</a></p>
<p><a href="http://qbrushes.com/downloads/brushes/Valley_of_the_Dry_Bones_3_by_seudavi.zip" target="_blank">Grungy brushset</a></p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Load the &#8220;Wedding skirt stock&#8221; image into Photoshop. Now what we need to achieve is to take the model out and seperate it from the rest of the image.</p>
<p>You may use any selection tools you like (Pen Tool, Lasso Tool, Magic Wand) to do this, however I feel the most convenient tool here is in fact the Extract Filter (located under Filter &gt; Extract or shortcut Ctrl + Alt + X). The reason is because with Extract Filter, you can easily make a selection around the model&#8217;s hair &#8211; which would be difficulty if you use any other selection tools.</p>
<p>So Go to Filter &gt; Extract and click on the marker on the top left corner: (I used a brush size of 40px)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2600" title="1-ex-marker" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-ex-marker.jpg" alt="1-ex-marker" width="496" height="261" /></p>
<p>Mark around the model as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2597" title="1-ex-4" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-ex-4-468x700.jpg" alt="1-ex-4" width="468" height="700" /></p>
<p>Then click on the Paint bucket under the marker:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2599" title="1-ex-bucket" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-ex-bucket.jpg" alt="1-ex-bucket" width="492" height="206" /></p>
<p>Fill the inside area as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2598" title="1-ex-5" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-ex-5-490x700.jpg" alt="1-ex-5" width="490" height="700" /></p>
<p>Click on the &#8220;OK&#8221; button and you will see the background around the model disappears. Now create a new document sized 2400px * 3600px with 200 dpi resolution, use the Movel Tool (V) and drag the model onto the new document.</p>
<p>Now you may see under the model&#8217;s right arm there is a portion of the texture isn&#8217;t removed. We can easily fix this by using Magic Wand tool to make a selection:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2602" title="1-magic-wand" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-magic-wand-500x419.jpg" alt="1-magic-wand" width="500" height="419" /></p>
<p>Go to Edit &gt; Clear and you will see it&#8217;s now removed:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2603" title="1-after-mw" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-after-mw-500x344.jpg" alt="1-after-mw" width="500" height="344" /></p>
<p>Here is the overall effect so far &#8211; you may see the edge of the model appears to be torned. I was going to the correct this, but in the end decided to leave it as it is for the final effect. Be aware this was created from the Extract Filter and because the brush size I used. You can avoid this by changing the brush size to a smaller one in Extract Filter.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2601" title="1-effect1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-effect1-500x664.jpg" alt="1-effect1" width="500" height="664" /></p>
<p>Name this layer as &#8220;Model&#8221; and prepare for some Photo Retouching fun!</p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Duplicate this model layer<strong> Once.</strong> Apply the following blending mode to the duplicated layer:</p>
<p>Blending Mode: Multiply</p>
<p>Opacity: 100%</p>
<p>Go to Filter &gt; Brush strokes &gt; sumi -e and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2622" title="2-sumie" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-sumie-500x333.jpg" alt="2-sumie" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>Then apply the following Layer Mask to this duplicated layer: (Tip: use the Gradient Tool to achieve this effect)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2604" title="2-mask-1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-mask-1-500x682.jpg" alt="2-mask-1" width="500" height="682" /></p>
<p>Duplicate this layer twice, keep the blending mode of those two layers as &#8220;Muliply&#8221;, but drop their opacity to 60%. You will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2605" title="2-effect2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-effect2-500x669.jpg" alt="2-effect2" width="500" height="669" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Duplicate the original &#8220;Model&#8221; layer<strong> once again and drag this duplicated layers on top of all other layers. </strong></p>
<p>On the first (bottom) duplicated layer, apply the following Gaussian Blur settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2606" title="3-gau-blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-gau-blur.jpg" alt="3-gau-blur" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>Change the blending mode of this layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and add a layer mask to it. On the mask, use the Eraser Tool to ereser some random areas on the shirt so to create some lighting depth:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2607" title="3-mask" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-mask-500x685.jpg" alt="3-mask" width="500" height="685" /></p>
<p>After erasing, duplicate this layer once and change the blending mode to &#8220;Soft light&#8221;, here is th effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2608" title="3-effect3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-effect3-500x668.jpg" alt="3-effect3" width="500" height="668" /></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Duplicate the original &#8220;Model&#8221; layer <strong>one more time and drag it on top of all other layers,</strong> apply the following High Pass filter (Filter &gt; other &gt; high pass) to it:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2609" title="4-high-pas" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/4-high-pas.jpg" alt="4-high-pas" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode to &#8220;Hard Light&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2610" title="4-effect3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/4-effect3-500x666.jpg" alt="4-effect3" width="500" height="666" /></p>
<p>Optional Step: to add some extra smoothness and lighting contrast to the image, you can duplicate the original &#8220;Model&#8221; layer one more time, apply the following Gaussian Blur settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2606" title="3-gau-blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-gau-blur.jpg" alt="3-gau-blur" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>Change the blending mode to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and add a layer mask to the layer, erase the following parts on the mask:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2611" title="4-eraser" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/4-eraser-471x700.jpg" alt="4-eraser" width="471" height="700" /></p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2612" title="4-effect-1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/4-effect-1-500x664.jpg" alt="4-effect-1" width="500" height="664" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>On top of all previous layers, add the following two adjustment layers (Layer &gt; new adjustment layer &gt; &#8230;)</p>
<p>Levels</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2613" title="5-levels" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-levels.jpg" alt="5-levels" width="399" height="305" /></p>
<p>Black and White</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2614" title="5-bw" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-bw.jpg" alt="5-bw" width="410" height="452" /></p>
<p>Create a new layer called &#8220;colour&#8221; on top of those two adjustment layers, set its blending mode to &#8220;overlay&#8221; and opacity to 40% and use a dark brown brush to paint over the following area:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2615" title="5-colour" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-colour-500x685.jpg" alt="5-colour" width="500" height="685" /></p>
<p>Add another Curves Adjustment layer on top of the &#8220;colour&#8221; layer, apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2616" title="5-curves" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-curves.jpg" alt="5-curves" width="471" height="446" /></p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2617" title="5-effect3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-effect3-500x676.jpg" alt="5-effect3" width="500" height="676" /></p>
<h3>Step 6</h3>
<p>Now let add some background textre to it. Create a new layer just above the background layer, use the <a href="http://qbrushes.com/downloads/brushes/Valley_of_the_Dry_Bones_3_by_seudavi.zip" target="_blank">Grungy brushset</a> to over it (try out different brush flow and opacity settings), here is my effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2618" title="6-brush" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/6-brush-500x671.jpg" alt="6-brush" width="500" height="671" /></p>
<p>To add a bit more texture effect, we can create a new layer fill with Black colour, go to Filter &gt; Render &gt; Fiber and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2619" title="6-fibre" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/6-fibre.jpg" alt="6-fibre" width="288" height="375" /></p>
<p>Change the blending mode to &#8220;Soft light&#8221; and drop the opacity to 55%, you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2620" title="6-effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/6-effect-500x667.jpg" alt="6-effect" width="500" height="667" /></p>
<p>Ok that’s it for this tutorial! You can of course add some of your own texture or filter effect and see what the end results are!</p>
<p>Here is my final image for this tutorial: (I slightly adjusted the colour contrast and add some motion blur effect) &#8211; Click to enlarge:</p>

<p>Alternative version:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/horror-grungy-poster-final-3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2626" title="horror-grungy-poster-final-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/horror-grungy-poster-final-3-500x666.jpg" alt="horror-grungy-poster-final-3" width="500" height="666" /></a></p>
<p>Hope you enjoy this tutorial, drop me a comment if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out.</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>

<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the steps I took to make a Grungy-Style Abstract Typography using rusted metal texture in Photoshop. The inspiration of this tutorial came from a grungy metal image I came across on stockvault.net and thought I could have a play with it :)</p>
<p>Together we will explore some layer blending techniques, variuos filter effects, and an interesting method of making the text look 3D. Have a go!</p>
<p>Here is a preview of the final image: (click to enlarge)</p>

<p>OK let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Download a copy of <a title="Grungy Image" href="http://www.stockvault.net/Rusted_g18-Rusted_metal_p12816.html" target="_blank">this grungy image</a> from stockvault.net and load it into Photoshop. We will use it as the background of this poster.</p>
<p>Rotate the canvas by 90 degree CW by going into Image &gt; Rotate Canvas &gt; 90 degree CW:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1701" title="1-rotate-canvas" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/1-rotate-canvas-463x700.jpg" alt="1-rotate-canvas" width="463" height="700" /></p>
<p>We can add a bit of noise on the background image and make it look more grungy. To do this, duplicate the background layer and go to Filter &gt; Noise &gt; Dust &amp; Scratches and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1702" title="1-dust-and-scratch" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/1-dust-and-scratch.jpg" alt="1-dust-and-scratch" width="316" height="347" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending option to &#8220;Overlay&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1704" title="1-effect1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/1-effect1-466x700.jpg" alt="1-effect1" width="466" height="700" /></p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Background copy&#8221; layer once, go to Filter &gt; Sharpen &gt; Smart Sharpen and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1705" title="2-sharpen" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-sharpen-500x317.jpg" alt="2-sharpen" width="500" height="317" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1706" title="2-sha-shadow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-sha-shadow-500x317.jpg" alt="2-sha-shadow" width="500" height="317" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1707" title="2-highlight" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-highlight-500x317.jpg" alt="2-highlight" width="500" height="317" /></p>
<p>Keep the layer blending mode as &#8220;overlay&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1708" title="2-effect5" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-effect5-486x700.jpg" alt="2-effect5" width="486" height="700" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Background copy 2&#8243; layer once and go to Filter &gt; Stylize &gt; Glowing edge and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1709" title="3-glowing-edge" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/3-glowing-edge-500x213.jpg" alt="3-glowing-edge" width="500" height="213" /></p>
<p>Keep the layer blending option as &#8220;overlay&#8221; and you will see the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1710" title="3-effect5" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/3-effect5-500x674.jpg" alt="3-effect5" width="500" height="674" /></p>
<p>Then hit Ctrl + Shift + Alt + B and bring up the Black and White adjustment Tool, apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1711" title="3-bw1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/3-bw1.jpg" alt="3-bw1" width="410" height="452" /></p>
<p>And you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1712" title="3-effect-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/3-effect-2-500x690.jpg" alt="3-effect-2" width="500" height="690" /></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Background Copy 3&#8243; layer once, change the blending option of the duplicated layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and you have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1713" title="4-blend" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-blend-500x692.jpg" alt="4-blend" width="500" height="692" /></p>
<p>To create a bit of colour depth, we apply the Black and White adjustments to this layer (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + B) with the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1714" title="4-bw1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-bw1.jpg" alt="4-bw1" width="410" height="452" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1715" title="4-effect6" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-effect6-500x691.jpg" alt="4-effect6" width="500" height="691" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>Still on the previous layer, grab the Eraser Tool with a big soft round brush, erase the area where covering the yellow/golden part:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1716" title="5-erase" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-erase-500x649.jpg" alt="5-erase" width="500" height="649" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending option to &#8220;Color&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1717" title="5-effect7" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-effect7-500x689.jpg" alt="5-effect7" width="500" height="689" /></p>
<p>Go back to the &#8220;Background copy 3&#8243; layer, again use the Eraser Tool with a big soft brush to erase the centre portion of the image:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1718" title="5-erase-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-erase-2.jpg" alt="5-erase-2" width="437" height="454" /></p>
<h3>Step 6</h3>
<p>Now let&#8217;s add some text onto the background texture. Download a copy of <a href="http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Decker.htm" target="_blank">this font </a>and type some text onto the canvas:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1719" title="6-type" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-type-500x566.jpg" alt="6-type" width="500" height="566" /></p>
<p>When you&#8217;re happy with the text, rasterize it and change its layer blending mode to &#8220;Hard Light&#8221;.  Apply the following layer blending options:</p>
<p>Drop Shadow:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1720" title="6-drop-shadow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-drop-shadow-500x350.jpg" alt="6-drop-shadow" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Bevel and Emboss:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1721" title="6-bevel" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-bevel-500x350.jpg" alt="6-bevel" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Texture</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1722" title="6-texture" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-texture-500x350.jpg" alt="6-texture" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Gradient Overlay:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1723" title="6-gradient" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-gradient-500x350.jpg" alt="6-gradient" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>And you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1724" title="6-effect5" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-effect5-499x449.jpg" alt="6-effect5" width="499" height="449" /></p>
<p>Duplicate the text layer 7-8 times, keep the blending mode of each layer as &#8220;hard light&#8221;, and you will have a deeper text effect as a result:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1725" title="6-effect-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-effect-2-500x505.jpg" alt="6-effect-2" width="500" height="505" /></p>
<p>Merge those duplicated layers together and name the merge layer as &#8220;Text&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Step 7</h3>
<p>Change the blend mode of the text layer to &#8220;Hard light&#8221;, duplicate it once again and apply the following Gaussian Blur filter on the duplicated layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1726" title="7-gau-blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/7-gau-blur.jpg" alt="7-gau-blur" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>After applying the Blur filter, duplicate this layer once more. On the duplicated layer, add a White colour overlay blending option as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1727" title="7-white-colour" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/7-white-colour-500x350.jpg" alt="7-white-colour" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Then on this layer, use the Eraser Tool to gently eraser some part of the text, by doing so you can create a uneven lighting effect and make the text look 3D:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1729" title="7-effect5" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/7-effect5-500x458.jpg" alt="7-effect5" width="500" height="458" /></p>
<h3>Step 8</h3>
<p>To a bit of extra flavor to the image, we can add a new layer called &#8220;cloud&#8221; in between the text and the background texture layer, use the Lasso Tool with 40px feather to make a selection around the text and render some cloud inside:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1730" title="8-cloud1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/8-cloud1-500x500.jpg" alt="8-cloud1" width="500" height="500" /></p>
<p>To make the cloud look a bit uneven, we can simply duplicate the existing cloud layer once and set the blending mode of the duplicated layer to &#8220;hard light&#8221;.</p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1731" title="8-effect3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/8-effect3-500x687.jpg" alt="8-effect3" width="500" height="687" /></p>
<p>Ok that&#8217;s it for this tutorial! You can of course add some of your own texture or filter effect and see what the end results are!</p>
<p>Here is my final result for this tutorial: (I add a bit of radial blur, and adjusted the colour balance a bit)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1732" title="grungy-poster-typo-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/grungy-poster-typo-final-2-500x690.jpg" alt="grungy-poster-typo-final-2" width="500" height="690" /></p>
<p>Hope you enjoy this tutorial, drop me a comment if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out.</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>
