Photoshop’s latest update introduces a game-changing tool: the reference image feature. This innovative addition to the Generative Fill tool empowers you to create stunning visuals with unparalleled precision.

What is a Reference Image?

A reference image is a visual guide you provide to Photoshop’s AI. This image serves as a blueprint, influencing the AI’s generation of new content. Whether you aim to extend an image, fill in gaps, or create entirely new elements, this is your secret weapon.

What Version of Photoshop Do I Need to Access this Feature?

The reference image feature is currently available in the Photoshop Beta. There’s no official release date for the feature yet, but Adobe has mentioned it will be “more generally available later this year”.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Reference Image

Step 1: Load the image your want to modify into Photoshop and decide what object on the image you want to replace using Generative Fill.

Step 2: Once this is decided, download another image that captures the desired style, colour palette, or subject matter. This image will guide the AI’s creative process.

Step 3: Select your object on the original image, choose “Generative Fill”. You will see a upload button right next to the text prompt. Click on that and you will see the “Reference Image” window as shown below:

Step 4: Choose your image, note that there is an option to remove background:

That’s it! Let the AI Work Its Magic: Photoshop’s AI analyses the reference image and generates content that seamlessly blends with the existing image.

Advantages of Using Reference Image

    Elevate Your Designs

The reference image feature is a precision tool. By providing a clear visual reference, you can steer the AI towards generating content that aligns perfectly with your vision. This level of control is invaluable for tasks like removing unwanted objects, extending images seamlessly, or creating intricate patterns.

    Unleash Your Creativity

This feature is a playground for creativity. Experiment with different reference images to achieve a myriad of styles and effects. For instance, use a watercolour painting as a reference to add artistry, or incorporate elements from a photograph for a realistic touch.

    Save Time and Effort

Beyond creativity, the reference image feature is a time-saver. Tasks that once consumed hours can now be completed in minutes. This efficiency boost benefits both professional designers and hobbyists alike.

    Potential Issues

Since this feature is in its early days, I noticed there are a number of issues Adobe need to iron out before this feature can be released into wider public, including:

    Accuracy Issues

    • Inaccurate interpretation: The AI might misinterpret the style, color palette, or details from the reference image, leading to unexpected results.
    • Difficulty with complex reference images: The AI might struggle to process highly detailed or complex reference images, resulting in less accurate or unpredictable outputs.
    • Limitation on Background Removal: this option needs big improvement, especially on images with complex background.

    Performance Issues

    • Slow processing times: Generating content based on a reference image can be computationally intensive, leading to longer processing times.
    • Resource-intensive: The feature might require significant system resources, potentially impacting overall Photoshop performance.

    Limitations in Creativity

    • Overreliance: The AI might become too reliant on the reference image, limiting its ability to generate truly original and creative content.
    • Difficulty capturing subtle nuances: The AI might struggle to capture subtle artistic nuances or styles present in the reference image.

    Conclusion

Photoshop’s reference image feature is a transformative tool that empowers designers to achieve extraordinary results effortlessly. By providing a visual reference, you harness the power of AI to create stunning visuals that align with your creative vision. Whether refining existing images or generating new content, this feature is a must-have for any designer seeking cutting-edge results.
