I’m a big fan of Marvel films and was quite excited to see the latest “Black Widow” trailer release. Upon seeing the trailer, I was quite intrigued with the text effect they have for the movie title, which appeared towards the end of the trailer. I thought I would try and create a text effect inspired by it, and share the process in this tutorial with you guys.

Here is a preview of the final effect I have for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)

Why Create a Black Widow Text Effect?

The “Black Widow” movie, released in 2021, features a bold, futuristic text style that’s perfect for eye-catching designs. This tutorial will teach you how to recreate that iconic look while introducing Photoshop techniques like layer styles, clipping masks, and texture blending. Plus, you’ll learn how to adapt this effect for other Marvel-inspired projects, such as Avengers or Spider-Man designs.

What You’ll Need

  • Adobe Photoshop (any recent version, e.g., Photoshop 2025 recommended)
  • A bold, sans-serif font (e.g., Bebas Neue or similar from DaFont)
  • A metallic texture (optional, but we’ll provide a free sample texture link below)
  • Basic familiarity with Photoshop (don’t worry, we’ll explain key concepts!)
  • Concrete Texture

Step 1 – Background Preparation

Create a new document with a dimension of 1440px * 800px with your chosen DPI. Set the background colour to black.

Beginner Tip: DPI stands for “dots per inch.” Higher DPI (e.g., 300) ensures crisp prints, while 72 DPI is fine for web graphics.

Load the concrete texture in Photoshop, select a portion of the texture:

Copy and paste the selection to our document, cover the entire canvas:

Use a soft eraser to fade the following area:

Apply the following adjustment layers to this concrete layer:

Black and White

Levels

Use a dark red paint brush with around 20% opacity, paint some red colour over the background:

Step 2 – Working on Our Black Widow Text

Use the font we downloaded, type the following letters to our canvas, using Italic Style:

Apply the following layer blending options to the text:

Bevel and Emboss:

Stroke:

Drop Shadow:

and here is the effect so far:

Step 3 – Extra Effect on Our Text

If you need more help with clipping mask, check out this tutorial from my blog.

We can go back to the concrete texture, copy another piece onto our document and cover the text. Set this new layer as clipping mask to the text layer below:

Here is the effect after apply the clipping mask:

We can adjust the colour of the concrete by apply the following “colour balance” adjustments:

Use a particle brush, paint some dust effect over the text:

Use the Rectangular Shape drawing tool, draw 2 lines across the text – make sure you set them as clipping mask to the text layer. You will have the following effect:

Step 4 – Final Touches

We will apply some final touches to our text in this step. Use a soft brush, set the colour to red and paint a big dot, then set the colour to orange, paint a smaller dot in the middle, as shown below:

Use the free transform tool, compress it down and attach it to our text to form a laser-style light effect:

Apply the following Selective Colour adjustment layer on top:

Adjust the brightness and contrast of the text with the following adjustment layer:

and this is my final result: (click to enlarge)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overloading Layer Styles: Too many effects can make the text look cluttered. Stick to 2–3 key styles.
  • Ignoring Mobile Users: Test your exported image on mobile to ensure it’s clear and vibrant.
  • Skipping Texture Alignment: Ensure the metallic texture aligns naturally with the text’s contours.

That’s it for this tutorial! Leave me a comment below if you have any questions and I will try my best to answer it.
