<p>OK let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<p>To complete this tutorial, you will need the following stock:</p>
<p><a href="http://smilingmelody.deviantart.com/art/stock-jump-93394133" target="_blank">Jump</a></p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Load the &#8220;Jump&#8221; stock image into Photoshop, double-click on the background layer inside the layer pallatte to unlock it. Then create a new layer called &#8220;bg&#8221; , fill it with black colour and put it under the background layer we just unlock.</p>
<p>Use whatever selection tool you perfer to clear out the surroundings, and leave just the jumping man on the canvas:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3398" title="1 clear" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/1-clear-500x319.jpg" alt="1 clear" width="500" height="319" /></p>
<p>It doesn&#8217;t really matter if the selection isn&#8217;t perfect. The tutorial is not about teaching you how to make the perfect human selection (However if you do want to learn, <a href="http://www.psdvault.com/photo-effect/make-perfect-selection-for-human-object-by-utilising-channel-mask-technique-in-photoshop/" target="_blank">here is a tutorial for you</a>).</p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Now let&#8217;s head straight to the image adjustment layers. You will find those options under Layer &gt; New Adjustment Layer &gt; &#8230; , as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3399" title="2 adju" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/2-adju.jpg" alt="2 adju" width="393" height="419" /></p>
<p>In this tutorial, I will be using three adjustment layers to retouch this jumping man: colour balance, curves and brightness and contrast. In my opinion, these are probably the most frequent used adjustment layers you will be using for whatever design you&#8217;re doing.</p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Let&#8217;s go ahead and apply those adjustment layers. From bottom to top,</p>
<p>Color Balance</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3400" title="2 col bal" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/2-col-bal1.jpg" alt="2 col bal" width="437" height="224" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3401" title="2 col bal 2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/2-col-bal-2.jpg" alt="2 col bal 2" width="437" height="224" /></p>
<p>Curves</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3402" title="2 curves" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/2-curves1.jpg" alt="2 curves" width="471" height="446" /></p>
<p>Brightness and Contrast</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3403" title="2 bc" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/2-bc.jpg" alt="2 bc" width="326" height="124" /></p>
<p>And you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3404" title="2 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/2-effect3-500x328.jpg" alt="2 effect" width="500" height="328" /></p>
<p>You will see now the colour tone and the lightness of the image are completely changed, just by adding those three adjustment layers. And the good thing about them is that you can have more flexibility if you do want to make changes later on, because the original layer is not altered.</p>
<p>Also, because those adjustment layers are in fact layer, you can apply mask, or change the blending mode for them, to experience different result.</p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Now I will show you a quick way I use to create this cool dis-integration effect. Firstly let&#8217;s create a custom brushset.</p>
<p>Select a 5px, soft round brush, and apply the following brush dynamics to it:</p>
<p>Shape Dynamics</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3405" title="4 sha dyn" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/4-sha-dyn.jpg" alt="4 sha dyn" width="370" height="423" /></p>
<p>Scattering</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3406" title="4 scat" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/4-scat.jpg" alt="4 scat" width="370" height="423" /></p>
<p>and tick Noise, Airbrush and Smoothing options.</p>
<p>Now load the selection of the jumping man layer by Ctrl + left click the thumbnail image of that layer, click the rectangular marquee tool, then right-click inside the selection and choose &#8220;Make work path&#8221;:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3407" title="4 make work" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/4-make-work-500x433.jpg" alt="4 make work" width="500" height="433" /></p>
<p>Then define the Feather as 2px, and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3408" title="4 path" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/4-path-500x342.jpg" alt="4 path" width="500" height="342" /></p>
<p>After you made the work path, create a new layer called &#8220;stroke&#8221; and put it just under the jumping man layer, then click on the Pen Tool icon, and right-click on the work path and choose &#8220;stroke path&#8221;:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3409" title="4 pen" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/4-pen-500x248.jpg" alt="4 pen" width="500" height="248" /></p>
<p>Make sure the brushset you just created is still selected and choose &#8220;Brush&#8221; in the next window, leave &#8220;simulate pressure&#8221; option un-checked.</p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode of this stroke layer to be &#8220;Screen&#8221; and drop the opacity to 40%. You will now have this effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3410" title="4 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/4-effect3-500x362.jpg" alt="4 effect" width="500" height="362" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>To create some motion for the image, we can duplicate the &#8220;stroke&#8221; layer from the previous layer once, drag the duplicated layer to the top of the jumping man layer, and apply the following <strong>radial</strong> blur:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3411" title="5 mo blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/5-mo-blur.jpg" alt="5 mo blur" width="311" height="236" /></p>
<p>Change the blending mode to &#8220;Hard Light&#8221; for this duplicated layer, and duplicate it once again. You will now have this effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3412" title="5 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/5-effect1-500x379.jpg" alt="5 effect" width="500" height="379" /></p>
<h3>Step 6</h3>
<p>To add some more effect to the image, we can grab this <a href="http://qbrushes.com/downloads/brushes/Debris_Brush_Set_by_zigabooooo.zip" target="_blank">Debris brushset</a> and create a new layer just below the &#8220;Brightness and Contrast&#8221; adjustment layer, and paint some debris on it:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3413" title="6 debris" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/6-debris-500x360.jpg" alt="6 debris" width="500" height="360" /></p>
<p>And that&#8217;s pretty much it for this tutorial! I added some abstract lines stretching from his arm to make this image more vibrant. This require some basic use of the Pen Tool, if you&#8217;re interested, I <a href="http://www.psdvault.com/abstracts/design-an-elegant-abstract-site-header-image-with-in-photoshop/" target="_blank">have a pretty neat tutorial here</a> showing you how to make this sort of effect.</p>
<p>Here is the final effect I have for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/jump-scene-flatten-2-final.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3414" title="jump-scene-flatten-2-final" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/jump-scene-flatten-2-final-500x261.jpg" alt="jump-scene-flatten-2-final" width="500" height="261" /></a></p>
<p>Hope you enjoy this tutorial, drop me a comment if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out.</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>

		</div>
<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the processes I used to design this awesome space dancer scene with Nebula Texture in Photoshop. The inspiration of the tutorial in fact came from the latest &#8220;Prince of Persia&#8221; game cover (and yes, I do love this game very much!)</p>
<p>Together we will be using image adjustment options, layer blending, masking and filter effect. I will also like to emphasise that it&#8217;s very importance to choose the right stock texture for your design, as they will contribute and improve your final effect dramatically.</p>
<p>This is an fairly easy tutorial and I hope you enjoy it! Have a try!</p>
<p>Here is the preview of the final result:</p>
<p><img title="5 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/5-effect-500x617.jpg" alt="5 effect" width="500" height="617" /></p>
<p>alternative version I have: (adjusted the colour balance and add two planets into it)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/nebula-dancer-flatten-final-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2887" title="nebula-dancer-flatten-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/nebula-dancer-flatten-final-2-500x615.jpg" alt="nebula-dancer-flatten-final-2" width="500" height="615" /></a></p>
<p>OK Let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<p>To complete this tutorial, you will need the following stocks:</p>
<p><a href="http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/art/Desert-Dancer-2-76138944" target="_blank">Dancer</a></p>
<p><a href="http://moonchilde-stock.deviantart.com/art/Aiden-Nebula-Stock-117654708" target="_blank">Nebula Texture 1</a></p>
<p><a href="http://mithgariel.deviantart.com/art/My-12th-nebula-93453599" target="_blank">Nebula Texture 2</a></p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Load the dancer image into Photoshop and resize the image to 1200px * 1477px. The purpose of resizing image is to make it rough the same size as the textures we&#8217;re going to apply on it.</p>
<p>Make a duplication of the background layer, hit Ctrl + Alt + Shift + B and apply the Black and White adjustment Tool with following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2870" title="1 bw" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/1-bw.jpg" alt="1 bw" width="410" height="452" /></p>
<p>Name this duplicated layer &#8220;black and white&#8221;. Make another two duplications of this &#8220;black and white&#8221; layer and change the blending mode of those two duplicated to &#8220;Hard Light&#8221;.</p>
<p>You will have the following effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2871" title="1 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/1-effect-500x609.jpg" alt="1 effect" width="500" height="609" /></p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Load the &#8220;Nebula texture 1&#8243; image into Photoshop, copy and paste it onto our dancer document. This will create a new layer and let&#8217;s name it &#8220;nebula texture 1&#8243;.</p>
<p>On this &#8220;nebula texture 1&#8243; layer, go to Edit &gt; Transform &gt; Free Transform (or Ctrl + T), resize, rotate this layer as you wish, the ultimate goal is to find a position where the outer part of the nebula image is surrounding the model.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re satisfied, right-click this nebula texture 1 layer and choose &#8220;create clipping mask&#8221;.</p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2872" title="2 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/2-effect4-499x622.jpg" alt="2 effect" width="499" height="622" /></p>
<p>Now we can go on and add some image adjustments layers for the nebula layer, so as to make it more stand-out.</p>
<p>From bottom to top, we add the following image adjustment layers: (make sure you tick the &#8220;use previous layer to create clipping mask&#8221; option for every one of them)</p>
<p>Color Balance</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2873" title="3 col balance" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/3-col-balance.jpg" alt="3 col balance" width="437" height="224" /></p>
<p>Levels</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2874" title="3 levels" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/3-levels.jpg" alt="3 levels" width="399" height="305" /></p>
<p>On this Levels adjustment layer, apply the following layer mask:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2875" title="3 level mask" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/3-level-mask-500x618.jpg" alt="3 level mask" width="500" height="618" /></p>
<p>Brightness and Contrast</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2876" title="3 bright" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/3-bright.jpg" alt="3 bright" width="326" height="124" /></p>
<p>and you will have the following effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2877" title="3 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/3-effect2-500x625.jpg" alt="3 effect" width="500" height="625" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Load the &#8220;Nebula Texture 2&#8243; into Photoshop, copy and paste it onto our dancer document and use the Free Transform Tool (Ctrl + T) to resize, rotate until it fits into the canvas.</p>
<p>Name this layer as &#8220;nebula texture 2&#8243; and change its blending mode to &#8220;soft light&#8221; and you will have the following effect: (I hide the previous &#8220;nebula texture 1&#8243; layer and its related adjustment layers)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2879" title="3 effect 1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/3-effect-1-500x609.jpg" alt="3 effect 1" width="500" height="609" /></p>
<p>To add a bit more contrast to this &#8220;Nebula Texture 2&#8243; layer, we can add a Curve Adjustment layer  (Make sure to tick the &#8220;use previous layer to create clipping mask&#8221; option) with the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2880" title="4 curves" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/4-curves.jpg" alt="4 curves" width="471" height="529" /></p>
<p>Here is the effect afterwards:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2878" title="4 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/4-effect1-499x611.jpg" alt="4 effect" width="499" height="611" /></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Make all layers visible, you image should now look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2881" title="4 effect 1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/4-effect-1-500x609.jpg" alt="4 effect 1" width="500" height="609" /></p>
<p>Now we can do some retouch of the image. I personally feel the colour contrast is a bit too much, so I add another Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer on top of all layers, with the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2882" title="5 hue" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/5-hue.jpg" alt="5 hue" width="405" height="285" /></p>
<p>You will now have this effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2883" title="4 effect 3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/4-effect-3-500x607.jpg" alt="4 effect 3" width="500" height="607" /></p>
<p>You can of course try out other adjustment tools and see what result that bring you.</p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>Now we can add some motion into the image. To do this, flatten the image (I would suggest before you flatten the image, save a copy of the existing file, then the save the flattened image as a new psd file), duplicate the background layer once and go to Filter &gt; Blur &gt; Radial Blur and apply the following options:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2884" title="5 rad blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/5-rad-blur.jpg" alt="5 rad blur" width="311" height="236" /></p>
<p>Change the blending mode of the duplicated layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and opacity to 80%, you will have the following final effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2885" title="5 effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/5-effect-500x617.jpg" alt="5 effect" width="500" height="617" /></p>
<p>OK, that’s it for this tutorial! You can of course add some of your own texture or filter effect and see what the end results are! Remember to always keep your own creativity!</p>
<p>Here is an alternative version I have: (adjusted the colour balance and add two planets into it)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/nebula-dancer-flatten-final-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2887" title="nebula-dancer-flatten-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/nebula-dancer-flatten-final-2-500x615.jpg" alt="nebula-dancer-flatten-final-2" width="500" height="615" /></a></p>
<p>Hope you enjoy this tutorial, drop me a comment if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out.</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>

<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the method I use to drastically change the Mood and Colour Tones for your photo via Adobe Photoshop . Along the way, I will also demonstrate an interesting method of adding misty effect to your image.</p>
<p>This mood/colour tones changing method can be particularly useful for images that are reletively dark and lack of colour depth. We will be using a lof image adjustment tool, masking techniques and layer blending options. Have a go!</p>
<p>Here is a previous of the before and after effect:</p>
<p>Before</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-before.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2537" title="moutain-before" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-before-500x375.jpg" alt="moutain-before" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>
<p>After</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2536" title="moutain-final-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-3-500x375.jpg" alt="moutain-final-3" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>
<p>And alternative version with reduced colour saturation:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2535" title="moutain-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-2-500x375.jpg" alt="moutain-final-2" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>
<p>Ok let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<p>To complete this tutorial, you will the following stock:</p>
<p><a href="http://momotte2stocks.deviantart.com/art/Mountain-105-lakes-119575827" target="_blank">Mountain</a></p>
<p><a href="http://vpdesigns.deviantart.com/art/VPDesigns-cloud-abs-set-23888706" target="_blank">Cloud Brush</a></p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Load the &#8220;Mountain&#8221; image into Photoshop, duplicate the background layer once.</p>
<p>Now we can see there are some hard rock/stone on the left bottom corner. Because the overall effect we would like to achieve for the final image is a soft, misty mountain scene,  we should first tackle this particular area of the photo.</p>
<p>So on the duplicated layer, go to Filter &gt; Blur &gt; Gaussian Blur, apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2510" title="1-gau-blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-gau-blur.jpg" alt="1-gau-blur" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>Stay on the duplicated layer, add a layer mask onto it and on the mask, grab the Eraser Tool with a soft round brush setting, gently eraser the following area:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2511" title="1-eraser" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-eraser-500x376.jpg" alt="1-eraser" width="500" height="376" /></p>
<p>Drop the layer opacity of this duplicated layer to 55%, you can see the left bottom cornor because softer:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-effect.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2512" title="1-effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/1-effect-500x373.jpg" alt="1-effect" width="500" height="373" /></a></p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Duplicate the background layer <strong>three times</strong> and drag all three duplicated layers above the previous blurred layer.</p>
<p>From bottom to top, change the blending mode of the first duplicated layer to &#8220;Color Dodge&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2513" title="2-effect-1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-effect-1-500x370.jpg" alt="2-effect-1" width="500" height="370" /></p>
<p>Change the blending mode the second duplicate layer to &#8220;Multiply&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2514" title="2-effect-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-effect-2-500x369.jpg" alt="2-effect-2" width="500" height="369" /></p>
<p>On the third duplicated layer, change the blending mode to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and apply the following Gaussian Blur settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2515" title="2-gau-blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-gau-blur.jpg" alt="2-gau-blur" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>Again we add a layer mask to it, and use the Eraser Tool with a soft round brushset to erase the following area:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2516" title="2-eraser" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-eraser-500x376.jpg" alt="2-eraser" width="500" height="376" /></p>
<p>Drop the layer opacity to 75% and you will have the following effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2517" title="2-effect-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-effect-3-500x370.jpg" alt="2-effect-3" width="500" height="370" /></p>
<p>You can see now the overall image is much softer than the original and this is exactly what we want.</p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Now we&#8217;re onto the interesting part of this tutorial &#8211; adding the Mist! The method I use here is simply the Gradient Fill tool :)</p>
<p>So we go to Layer &gt; New Fill layer &gt; Gradient Fill and add a new gradient fill layer with the following settings on top of all other layers:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2518" title="3-gradient-fill" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-gradient-fill.jpg" alt="3-gradient-fill" width="302" height="186" /></p>
<p>Duplicate this Gradient Fill layer <strong>Three Times</strong>.</p>
<p>On the first duplicated layer, apply the following layer mask:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2519" title="3-mask-1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-mask-1-500x371.jpg" alt="3-mask-1" width="500" height="371" /></p>
<p>Change the blending mode of this layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and drop its opacity to 35%, you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2520" title="3-effect-11" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-effect-11-500x372.jpg" alt="3-effect-11" width="500" height="372" /></p>
<p>On the second duplicated layer, apply the following layer mask:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2521" title="3-mask-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-mask-2-500x375.jpg" alt="3-mask-2" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>Change its blending mode to &#8220;Color Dodge&#8221; and opacity to 60%, you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2522" title="3-effect-21" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-effect-21-500x370.jpg" alt="3-effect-21" width="500" height="370" /></p>
<p>On the third duplicated layer, apply the following layer mask: (Use the <a href="http://vpdesigns.deviantart.com/art/VPDesigns-cloud-abs-set-23888706" target="_blank">Cloud Brush</a> we downloaded for some fine-tuning and create uneven effect)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2523" title="3-mask-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-mask-3-500x375.jpg" alt="3-mask-3" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and drop the opacity to around 70%, you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2524" title="3-effect-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/3-effect-3-500x369.jpg" alt="3-effect-3" width="500" height="369" /></p>
<p>You will see now we have created some very realstic misty effect for our image.</p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>To add more depths to the image, we can add a new Curve Adjusment layer by going to Layer &gt; New Adjustment Layer &gt; Curves and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2525" title="4-curves1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/4-curves1.jpg" alt="4-curves1" width="471" height="446" /></p>
<p>Here is the effect after applying the Curves adjustment:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2527" title="4-effect2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/4-effect2-500x370.jpg" alt="4-effect2" width="500" height="370" /></p>
<p>Optional: I feel the bottom part of the image is a bit dark, so I apply the following mask to this Curves adjustment layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2526" title="4-mask" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/4-mask-500x374.jpg" alt="4-mask" width="500" height="374" /></p>
<p>And here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2528" title="4-effect-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/4-effect-2-500x369.jpg" alt="4-effect-2" width="500" height="369" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>You may now think: umm, the top left part of the sky looks a bit empty! No problem, we can easily fix this by using the Cloud Brushes we download and add some cloud over there.</p>
<p>Use the Eyedropper Tool (I) and left-click the following spot:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2529" title="5-eye" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-eye-500x288.jpg" alt="5-eye" width="500" height="288" /></p>
<p>And grab any of those cloud brushsets you like and drop its opacity to 50% and flow to 50%, create a new layer and simply paint over the empty portion of the sky:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2530" title="5-effect2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-effect2-500x299.jpg" alt="5-effect2" width="500" height="299" /></p>
<p>We can further adjust the colour balance of the image a bit. So go ahead and add a new Color Balance adjustment layer (Layer &gt; Adjustment layer &gt; Color balance) and apply the following settings:</p>
<p>Shadows</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2531" title="5-col-1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-col-1.jpg" alt="5-col-1" width="437" height="224" /></p>
<p>Midtones</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2532" title="5-col-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-col-2.jpg" alt="5-col-2" width="437" height="224" /></p>
<p>Highlights</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2533" title="5-col-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-col-3.jpg" alt="5-col-3" width="437" height="224" /></p>
<p>And here is the final effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2534" title="5-effect-23" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/5-effect-23-500x373.jpg" alt="5-effect-23" width="500" height="373" /></p>
<p>Ok that’s it for this tutorial! You can of course add some of your own texture or filter effect and see what the end results are!</p>
<p>Here is my final image for this tutorial: (I slightly adjusted the colour contrast and add some more cloudy effect ) &#8211; Click to enlarge:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-2.jpg"></a><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2536" title="moutain-final-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-3-500x375.jpg" alt="moutain-final-3" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>
<p>And alternative version with reduced colour saturation:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2535" title="moutain-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/moutain-final-2-500x375.jpg" alt="moutain-final-2" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>
<p>Hope you enjoy this tutorial, drop me a comment if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out.</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>

<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the processes I used to transform a daylight city image into a epic warzone scene in Photoshop. The inspiration of this tutorial came from a random war image I came across while reading a magazine.</p>
<p>Together, we will explore a variety of Photoshop techniques such as image adjustment option, a number of filter effect and some basic selection skills. This is an intermediate tutorial and some steps could be a bit tricky, but why not just have a go? ;)</p>
<p>Meanwhile, I would like to take this opportunity to raise the attention to the <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/events/bushfires/" target="_blank">Victorian Bushfire Appeal</a>, as you may have already known. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so throught the <a href="http://www.redcross.org.au/default.asp" target="_blank">Australian Redcross Website</a>.</p>
<p>Here is a preview of before and after images:</p>
<p>Before</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1569" title="before" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/before-500x334.jpg" alt="before" width="500" height="334" /></p>
<p>After (Click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/warzone-city-scene-final-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1568" title="warzone-city-scene-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/warzone-city-scene-final-2-500x334.jpg" alt="warzone-city-scene-final-2" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<p>Ok let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Download a copy of <a href="http://www.stockvault.net/download_file2.php?pid=12931" target="_blank">this city image</a> from stockvault.net and load it into Photoshop. Once loaded, duplicate the background layer once and name the duplicated layer as &#8220;Black and White&#8221;.</p>
<p>On the &#8220;Background Copy&#8221; layer,  hit Ctrl + Alt + Shift + B and bring up the Black and White image adjustment tool (If you&#8217;re using an earlier version than CS3, you can use Channel Mixer instead, just make sure you tick the &#8220;monochrome&#8221; option down the bottom).</p>
<p>Apply the following Black and White image adjustments:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1549" title="1-bw1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/1-bw1.jpg" alt="1-bw1" width="410" height="452" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending option of this duplicated layer to &#8220;Multiply&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1550" title="1-effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/1-effect-500x332.jpg" alt="1-effect" width="500" height="332" /></p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Black and White&#8221; layer once and name the duplicated layer &#8220;Curves&#8221;, hit Ctrl + M and bring up the Curves Image Adjustments, apply the following image adjustments:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1551" title="2-curves" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-curves.jpg" alt="2-curves" width="471" height="529" /></p>
<p>Keep the blending option of this layer as &#8220;Multiply&#8221; and you will see the image darkens further:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1552" title="3-effect1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/3-effect1-500x334.jpg" alt="3-effect1" width="500" height="334" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Now let&#8217;s add some particles on the image. Duplicate the &#8220;Curves&#8221; layer three times. On the &#8220;Curves Copy&#8221; layer, go to Filter &gt; Distort &gt; Glass and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1553" title="4-glass" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-glass-500x289.jpg" alt="4-glass" width="500" height="289" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending option to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and reduce the layer opacity to 70% and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1554" title="4-effect2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-effect2-500x332.jpg" alt="4-effect2" width="500" height="332" /></p>
<p>Then on &#8220;Curves Copy 2&#8243; layer, go to Filter &gt; Brush Strokes &gt; Spatter and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1555" title="4-spatter" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-spatter-500x392.jpg" alt="4-spatter" width="500" height="392" /></p>
<p>Change the blending option of this layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221;  and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1556" title="4-effect-1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-effect-1-500x332.jpg" alt="4-effect-1" width="500" height="332" /></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Grab the Lasso Tool and set its feather to 40px. Make a selection on the Sky area and the high rises as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1557" title="4-select" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-select-500x246.jpg" alt="4-select" width="500" height="246" /></p>
<p>While maintaining the selection, hit Ctrl + J and make a layer via copy. Name this newly created layer as &#8220;Smoke&#8221; and go to Filter &gt; Render &gt; Cloud and render some cloud:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1558" title="4-cloud" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-cloud-500x253.jpg" alt="4-cloud" width="500" height="253" /></p>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Somke&#8221; layer once. On the duplicated layer, go to Filter &gt; Render &gt; Difference Cloud. Apply this filter a few times and change the layer blending option of this layer to &#8220;color burn&#8221;.</p>
<p>You will see an effect similar to the following image:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1559" title="4-effect3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-effect3-499x268.jpg" alt="4-effect3" width="499" height="268" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>On the the duplicated &#8220;Smoke&#8221; layer, hit Ctrl + B and apply the following Colour Balance:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1560" title="5-colour-balance" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-colour-balance.jpg" alt="5-colour-balance" width="437" height="224" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1561" title="5-effect3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-effect3-500x329.jpg" alt="5-effect3" width="500" height="329" /></p>
<p>To reduct the noise a bit on the smoke, we can apply the following medium (Filter &gt; Noise &gt; Medium) settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1562" title="5-medium" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-medium.jpg" alt="5-medium" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>You can see the noise has been reduced:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1563" title="5-effect-21" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-effect-21-500x382.jpg" alt="5-effect-21" width="500" height="382" /></p>
<h3>Step 6</h3>
<p>Now we can add some fire effect to the image. Download a copy of <a href="http://www.cgtextures.com/texview2.php?id=19040&amp;PHPSESSID=acdf772c7ed3ae41eaece0993dfb55a7" target="_blank">this fire image</a> from cgtexture.com and load it into Photoshop.</p>
<p>Drag the entire image on our document and name newly-created layer &#8220;fire&#8221;. Set the layer blending option to &#8220;Screen&#8221;.</p>
<p>Grab the Eraser Tool (E) with a big brush, erase the black part of the fire image and leave just the fire:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1564" title="6-eraser" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-eraser.jpg" alt="6-eraser" width="366" height="362" /></p>
<p>Then use the Clone Stamp Tool (S) with different size of brushes, flow and opacity, clone this fire until it reaches desired burning effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1565" title="6-effect2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-effect2-500x189.jpg" alt="6-effect2" width="500" height="189" /></p>
<h3>Step 7</h3>
<p>To add a bit more dynamics to the image, I duplicate the background layer once more and put it just below the &#8220;Curves&#8221; layer in Step 2, then apply the following Radial Blur Settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1566" title="7-motion-blur" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/7-motion-blur.jpg" alt="7-motion-blur" width="311" height="236" /></p>
<p>Desaturate the layer and change its blending option to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1567" title="7-effect2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/7-effect2-500x328.jpg" alt="7-effect2" width="500" height="328" /></p>
<p>Ok that&#8217;s it for this tutorial! You can of course continue enhancing the image by adding some more effects, such as filter, texture or just have a play with its hue and saturation!</p>
<p>Below is my final image for this tutorial: (Click to enlarge, I added a planet of the sky, adjusting the hue and saturation of image)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/warzone-city-scene-final-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1568" title="warzone-city-scene-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/warzone-city-scene-final-2-500x334.jpg" alt="warzone-city-scene-final-2" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<p>Hope you enjoy this tutorial, drop me a comment if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out.</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>

<p>In this tutorial, I will demonstrate the processes I used to design this snowy rock text effect in Photoshop. The inspiration of this design came from a snowy mountain photo I saw the other day, and I thought I could create a similar text effect which might look interesting!</p>
<p>Along the way, we will use various layer blending options, some selection techniques, a number of filter effects and brush dynamics. It&#8217;s a simple tutorial suitable for Photoshop beginners. Have a try :)</p>
<p>Here is a preview of  my final image for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snowy-rock-text-final-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1510" title="snowy-rock-text-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snowy-rock-text-final-2-500x500.jpg" alt="snowy-rock-text-final-2" width="500" height="500" /></a></p>
<p>Here is alternative version which I added a bit of cloud and colour onto it:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snowy-rock-text-final-3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1511" title="snowy-rock-text-final-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snowy-rock-text-final-3-500x230.jpg" alt="snowy-rock-text-final-3" width="500" height="230" /></a></p>
<p>Ok let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Create a new document sized 800 x 800 px, fill the background layer with Black Colour.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s create some lighting effect for the background to work with. Use the Gradient Tool (G) tool and select the Radial Gradient options, Fill the background layer as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1483" title="1-grad" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/1-grad-500x499.jpg" alt="1-grad" width="500" height="499" /></p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Download a copy of <a href="http://img.dafont.com/dl/?f=cgf_locust_resistance" target="_blank">this font</a> from dafont.com and type some texts onto the background layer. Resize (if necessary) and position it in the centre of the canvas:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1484" title="2-text-position" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-text-position-500x467.jpg" alt="2-text-position" width="500" height="467" /></p>
<p>On the text layer, apply the following layer blending options:</p>
<p>Drop Shadow</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1485" title="2-drop-shadow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-drop-shadow-500x350.jpg" alt="2-drop-shadow" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Inner Shadow</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1486" title="2-inner-shadow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-inner-shadow-500x350.jpg" alt="2-inner-shadow" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Outer Glow</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1487" title="2-outer-glow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-outer-glow-500x350.jpg" alt="2-outer-glow" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Inner Glow</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1488" title="2-inner-glow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-inner-glow-500x350.jpg" alt="2-inner-glow" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Bevel and Emboss</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1489" title="2-bevel" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-bevel-500x350.jpg" alt="2-bevel" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Gradient Overlay</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1490" title="2-gradient-overlay" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-gradient-overlay-500x350.jpg" alt="2-gradient-overlay" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1491" title="2-effect1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/2-effect1-500x311.jpg" alt="2-effect1" width="500" height="311" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Donwload a copy of <a href="http://www.cgtextures.com/texview.php?id=4382&amp;PHPSESSID=9f540bbf9243909a6819d8f7ae9ef673" target="_blank">this rock image</a> from cgtextures.com and load it into Photoshop.  Then go back to our document and load the selection of the our text layer (holding down your Ctrl key and left-click on the thumbnail of the text layer in the layer palette):</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1492" title="3-select-text" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/3-select-text-500x267.jpg" alt="3-select-text" width="500" height="267" /></p>
<p>Then drag the selection onto the rock image we just loaded:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1493" title="3-texture-select" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/3-texture-select-499x229.jpg" alt="3-texture-select" width="499" height="229" /></p>
<p>Copy and paste the selection back to our text document and name the newly created layer &#8220;rock texture&#8221;.  You will see the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1494" title="3-effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/3-effect-500x282.jpg" alt="3-effect" width="500" height="282" /></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;rock texture&#8221; layer once.  Hide the duplicated layer for now.</p>
<p>Go back to  the original rock texture layer, apply the following Black and White adjustment options:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1495" title="4-bw" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-bw.jpg" alt="4-bw" width="410" height="452" /></p>
<p>Change the blending option of this layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221;.</p>
<p>Unhide the &#8220;rock texture copy&#8221; layer, change its blending option to &#8220;overlay&#8221;. The effect now should look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1496" title="4-effect" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/4-effect-500x303.jpg" alt="4-effect" width="500" height="303" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>Pfrom the previous step, we can see the white part of the text looks like snow, but it is not realistic enough in my opinion and we can add some more texture to make it look better!</p>
<p>To do this, download a copy of<a href="http://www.cgtextures.com/login.php?&amp;texid=8496&amp;destination=texview.php?id=8496&amp;PHPSESSID=16e03b33eb0a1a256bb6da0f7538d51e" target="_blank"> this snow image</a> from cgtextures.com and load it into Photoshop. Then Go back to our text document and use the same method described in Step 3 to load the text selection. This time we go one step further with the text selection: select the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), hold down the <strong>Alt key</strong> and at the same time draw a rectangular selection for the lower part of the text. (We would like to preserve this part of the rock texture and leave the upper part for the snowy effect)</p>
<p>The selection will now look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1497" title="5-select" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-select-500x247.jpg" alt="5-select" width="500" height="247" /></p>
<p>Hit Alt + Ctrl + D and assign a 10px feather to the selection. Drag this selection onto the snow image we just loaded, copy and paste some snow back to our text document:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1498" title="5-copy-paste" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-copy-paste-500x275.jpg" alt="5-copy-paste" width="500" height="275" /></p>
<p>If you feel there isn&#8217;t enough snow on the text, you can use the Clone Stamp Tool (S) with a small soft brush to clone some more: (Tip: load the selection of the text again, and clone inside the selection so the snow won&#8217;t go beyond the text border)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1499" title="5-clone" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-clone-500x222.jpg" alt="5-clone" width="500" height="222" /></p>
<p>Name this layer as &#8220;snow texture&#8221; and apply the following Curves adjustment settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1500" title="5-curve1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-curve1.jpg" alt="5-curve1" width="471" height="529" /></p>
<p>The effect so far will look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1502" title="5-effect1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/5-effect1-500x270.jpg" alt="5-effect1" width="500" height="270" /></p>
<h3>Step 6</h3>
<p>To add a bit more dynamic to the text effect, we can simply create a new layer called &#8220;falling snow&#8221;, grab a 3px soft round brush with the following brush dynamics:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1503" title="6-shape-dyn" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-shape-dyn.jpg" alt="6-shape-dyn" width="371" height="423" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1504" title="6-scattering" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-scattering.jpg" alt="6-scattering" width="371" height="423" /></p>
<p>Also Tick the &#8220;Smoothing&#8221; option.</p>
<p>On the &#8220;falling snow&#8221;, use this brush to paint around the text layer as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1506" title="6-after-brush-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-after-brush-2-500x257.jpg" alt="6-after-brush-2" width="500" height="257" /></p>
<p>To add a bit of softness to the falling snow, we can duplicate the &#8220;falling snow&#8221; layer once and apply the following Gaussian Blur settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1508" title="6-gau-blur1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-gau-blur1.jpg" alt="6-gau-blur1" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>The effect will now look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1509" title="6-effect1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/6-effect1-500x243.jpg" alt="6-effect1" width="500" height="243" /></p>
<p>Ok that&#8217;s pretty much it for this tutorial. I added some more rocky texture down the bottom, also did minor adjustment for hue and saturation and alter the angle of the text.</p>
<p>Here is my final image for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snowy-rock-text-final-2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1510" title="snowy-rock-text-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snowy-rock-text-final-2-500x500.jpg" alt="snowy-rock-text-final-2" width="500" height="500" /></a></p>
<p>Here is alternative version which I added a bit of cloud and colour onto it:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snowy-rock-text-final-3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1511" title="snowy-rock-text-final-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snowy-rock-text-final-3-500x230.jpg" alt="snowy-rock-text-final-3" width="500" height="230" /></a></p>
<p>You can of course further enhance this text effect by applying some more filter effects, or combining it with some background texture, that&#8217;s totally up to you :)</p>
<p>Hope you enjoy this tutorial, drop me a comment if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out.</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>

<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the process I used to design this refreshing, cool-looking natural text effect in Photoshop. I was having a walk in the nearby park and suddenly had this thought coming into my mind :)</p>
<p>Along the way, we will be using techniques such as layer blending options, image adjustments tool and some simple selection tools. You will see how easy it is to transform an average texture image into something unique by using Photoshop. Have a go!</p>
<p>Here is my final result of this tutorial: (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/natural-text-final-3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1404" title="natural-text-final-3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/natural-text-final-3-500x214.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="214" /></a></p>
<p>Ok let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Create a new document sized 1200 x 600 px, fill the background layer with Black colour. Choose a font you like (I used <a href="http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Decker.htm" target="_blank">this font</a> from urbanfonts.com) and type some texts onto the background layer.</p>
<p>This will automatically create a new layer on top of the background layer, name it &#8220;text&#8221; and position it in the centre of the canvas as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1376" title="1-text-position" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/1-text-position-500x241.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="241" /></p>
<p>Rasterise the text once you&#8217;re satisfy with its size and position.</p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>On &#8220;text&#8221; layer, apply the following Layer Blending options:</p>
<p>Inner Shadow</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1377" title="2-inner-shadow1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-inner-shadow1-500x350.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Outer Glow</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1378" title="2-outer-glow1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-outer-glow1-500x350.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Bevel and Emboss</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1379" title="2-bevel2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-bevel2-500x350.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Contour</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1380" title="2-colour-overlay1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-colour-overlay1-500x350.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p><strong>Please note there is no need for applying the Gradient Overlay.</strong></p>
<p>The effect so far will look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1381" title="2-effect8" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-effect8-500x235.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="235" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Still on the &#8220;Text&#8221; layer, load the selection of the text by holding down the Ctrl key and left-click the thumbnail image of &#8220;Text&#8221; layer on the layer palette:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1382" title="3-load" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-load-500x117.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="117" /></p>
<p>Then go to Select &gt; Modify &gt; Expand and expand the image by 15px, then go to Select &gt; Modify &gt; Feather and apply a 15px feather to the selection.</p>
<p>The selection should now look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1383" title="3-after-feather" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-after-feather-500x149.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="149" /></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Download <a href="http://img261.imageshack.us/my.php?image=grasstexturepd6.jpg" target="_blank">a copy of this grass texture</a> and load it into Photoshop. This image is of my own stock and you can use it wherever you want.</p>
<p>Go back to our own document and drag the selection onto our the grass texture:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1384" title="4-drag2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-drag2-500x197.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="197" /></p>
<p>Copy and paste the selection back to the our document and name the newly-created layer &#8220;Grass&#8221;. The effect so far will look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1385" title="4-effect8" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-effect8-500x170.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="170" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>Change the layer blending option to &#8220;Grass&#8221; layer to &#8220;Hard Light&#8221;, hit Ctrl + L and apply the following level adjustments:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1386" title="5-level" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/5-level.jpg" alt="" width="399" height="305" /></p>
<p>The effect so far will look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1387" title="5-effect7" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/5-effect7-499x173.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="173" /></p>
<p>Optional: if you would like to add more leaves and grass onto it, you may duplicate this grass layer a couple of times, and keep its blending option to &#8220;Hard Light&#8221;.</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;re happy with the grass texture, grab the Eraser Toll<strong> with a soft round brush (set the opacity and flow to 50%)</strong>, gently erase the area where the text sits beneath so the texts can be revealed and become clearer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1388" title="5-eraser" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/5-eraser-500x264.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="264" /></p>
<h3>Step 6</h3>
<p>Ok now we can add some wooden texture for text so it look a bit more natural.</p>
<p>Download a copy of <a href="http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?image=woodentexturexz0.jpg" target="_blank">this wooden texture</a> and load it into Photoshop. Go back to our own document and use the Lasso Tool (40px feather) and draw a selection underneath the text as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1389" title="6-selection" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/6-selection-500x233.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="233" /></p>
<p>Again we drag the selection onto the wooden texture, copy a random portion and paste back to our text document and name the newly created layer &#8220;Wood&#8221;. Drag this layer below all previous layer and just above the background layer.</p>
<p>The effect is shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1390" title="6-effect6" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/6-effect6-500x185.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="185" /></p>
<h3>Step 7</h3>
<p>On the &#8220;Wood&#8221; layer, apply the following Black and White image adjustments (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + B) and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1391" title="7-bw1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/7-bw1.jpg" alt="" width="410" height="452" /></p>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Wood&#8221; layer once and go to Filter &gt; Brush Strokes &gt; Accented Edges, apply the following settings on the duplicated layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1392" title="7-accented-edges" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/7-accented-edges-500x278.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="278" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending option of the duplicated wood layer to &#8220;Overlay&#8221; and duplicate it a couple of times more, you will see this adds a glowing effect to the wood texture:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1393" title="7-glow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/7-glow.jpg" alt="" width="432" height="339" /></p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1394" title="7-effect5" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/7-effect5-500x174.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="174" /></p>
<h3>Step 8</h3>
<p>To add some depth the text effect, we can do a multi-select of all layers (hold down Shift key and left-click the top and bottom once respectively)</p>
<p>Then hit Ctrl + T and use the free transform tool and distort the text until you reach the effect shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1395" title="8-distort" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/8-distort-500x229.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="229" /></p>
<p>For final touchup, you can create a new layer called &#8220;cloud&#8221; and again use the Lasso Tool to draw a selection, fill the selection with Black and render some cloud in there:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1396" title="8-cloud1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/8-cloud1-500x196.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="196" /></p>
<p>And apply the following Level Adjustments (Ctrl + L) to the &#8220;Cloud&#8221; layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1397" title="8-level1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/8-level1.jpg" alt="" width="399" height="305" /></p>
<p>Then apply the following Curve Adjustments (Ctrl + M) settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1398" title="8-curve" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/8-curve.jpg" alt="" width="471" height="529" /></p>
<p>Then put the &#8220;Cloud&#8221; layer just above the &#8220;Wood Copy 2&#8243; layer, change the blending option to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and you will have the following resulting effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1399" title="8-effect7" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/8-effect7-500x206.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="206" /></p>
<p>Ok that&#8217;s it for this tutorial! Hope you enjoy it and find it useful and inspirational!</p>
<p>Here is my final image for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)</p>

<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the steps I took to transform an ordinary mountain image into a realistic volcano eruption scene with lava effect in Photoshop.</p>
<p>The techniques I used in this tutorial include various image adjustment tools, a number of filters, layer blending options and some basic selection skills. This is a very simple tutorial with just 4 steps, however you will be amazed with the end result. Have a try :)</p>
<p>Here is a before and after preview:</p>
<p>Before</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1353" title="mountain-scene" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/mountain-scene-499x308.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="308" /></p>
<p>After (click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/volcano-scene-final.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1352" title="volcano-scene-final" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/volcano-scene-final-499x308.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="308" /></a></p>
<p>Ok let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Download a copy of <a href="http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mountainscenefa8.jpg" target="_blank">this image</a> and load it into Photoshop. This image is of my own stock and you can use it for any purpose.</p>
<p>Firstly we can make the image a bit darker. To do this, duplicate the background layer once. On the duplicated layer hit Ctrl + M to bring up the Curves Adjustment Tool, apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1333" title="1-curve1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/1-curve1.jpg" alt="" width="471" height="529" /></p>
<p>Then hit Ctrl + L and bring up the Levels Adjustments Tool, apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1334" title="1-level" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/1-level.jpg" alt="" width="399" height="305" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode of this duplicated layer to &#8220;Multiply&#8221;. Duplicate this layer a few times, by doing so it will further darken the image.</p>
<p>The effect so far will look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1335" title="1-effect1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/1-effect1-500x308.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="308" /></p>
<p>Merge the duplicated layer together once you&#8217;re satisfy with the result. Name the merged layer as &#8220;Darken Colour&#8221; and keep its layer blending mode as &#8220;Multiply&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Darken Colour&#8221; layer once and name the duplicated layer as &#8220;colour overlay&#8221;, then go to Image &gt; Adjustment &gt; Channel Mixer and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1336" title="2-channel-mixer" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-channel-mixer-500x407.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="407" /></p>
<p>Then go to Image &gt; Adjustment &gt; Color Balance and apply the following settings:</p>
<p>Midtones</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1337" title="2-colour-bal" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-colour-bal-500x384.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="384" /></p>
<p>Shadows</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1338" title="2-colour-bal-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-colour-bal-2-500x372.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="372" /></p>
<p>Then hit Ctrl + M and apply the following Curves Adjustments:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1339" title="2-curve2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-curve2-500x433.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="433" /></p>
<p>After applying those image adjustments, change the layer blending options to &#8220;Color&#8221; and you should have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1340" title="2-effect7" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-effect7-500x299.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="299" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Create a new layer called &#8220;Lava&#8221; and use the Lasso Tool with a 40px feather to draw a selection as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1341" title="3-lasso" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-lasso-500x390.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="390" /></p>
<p>Then go to Filter &gt; Render &gt; Cloud and render some cloud inside the selection: (Make sure you set black as background colour and white as foreground colour)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1342" title="3-cloud" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-cloud-500x368.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="368" /></p>
<p>Then go to Filter &gt; Render &gt; Difference Cloud and apply this filter 4-5 times: (Please note your cloud effect would be slightly different from mine)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1343" title="3-diiff-cloud" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-diiff-cloud-500x386.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="386" /></p>
<p>The use the Levels Adjustment Tool and apply settings similar to the following ones:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1344" title="3-level" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-level-500x401.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="401" /></p>
<p>Then apply the following Colour Balance Settings:</p>
<p>Midtones</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1345" title="3-colour" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-colour-500x347.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="347" /></p>
<p>Shadows</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1346" title="3-colour-shadow" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-colour-shadow-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>To add a bit more fluid effect onto the lava, we can go to Filter &gt; Artistic &gt; Plastic Wrap and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1347" title="3-plastic" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-plastic-500x350.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="350" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode of this &#8220;Lava&#8221; layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221; and you should have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1348" title="3-effect8" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-effect8-499x343.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="343" /></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Download a copy of <a href="http://cgtextures.com/texview2.php?id=16833&amp;PHPSESSID=40c6e798d86de3df6b8d0aa225a79205" target="_blank">this fire image (image 3)</a> and load it into Photoshop. Press Ctrl + A to select the whole image, copy and paste the selection to our document.</p>
<p>Name this layer as &#8220;Explosion&#8221; and put it below the &#8220;Lava&#8221; layer.</p>
<p>Use the Eraser Tool to get rid of the edges and leave the burning fire bits, resize the layer by hitting the Ctrl + T free transformation Tool and move it on top of the mountain.</p>
<p>See Below screenshot for detailed fire position:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1349" title="4-fire-move" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-fire-move-500x280.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="280" /></p>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Explosion&#8221; Layer a couple of times, resize and rotate the duplicated layers so to make some dynamic explosion effect: (Use the Levels or Curves Tool where necessary)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1350" title="4-duplicate" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-duplicate.jpg" alt="" width="462" height="292" /></p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1351" title="4-effect7" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-effect7-500x309.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="309" /></p>
<p>Ok that&#8217;s it for this tutorial! Although it&#8217;s a short one, I hope you find it useful and inspirational!</p>
<p>Below is my final image result: (Click to enlarge)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/volcano-scene-final.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1352" title="volcano-scene-final" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/volcano-scene-final-499x308.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="308" /></a></p>
<p>As usual If you have any questions, just drop me a comment :)</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>

<p>In this tutorial, I will show you the processes I used to transform an avarage day photo into a really nice golden sunset scene in Photoshop. This tutorial is inspired by <a href="http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/06/far-cry-2-hands-on-preview/b11.jpg" target="_blank">this magnificant work</a> from the Ubisoft game Fry Cry 2.</p>
<p>Together we will explore techniques such as layer blending, image adjustments, non-destructive photo editing, use of pen tool and various image filters. It&#8217;s an easy tutorial, have a go!</p>
<p>Meanwhile, if you would like to find some more info about non-destructive photo editing, I have another post here:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/photo-effect/bring-colour-and-light-out-of-ordinary-image/" target="_blank">Bring Colour and Light out of Ordinary Image</a></p>
<p>Or if you would like to find out some basic info about Pen Tool, I have another post <a href="http://www.photoshoplady.com/forums/drawing-tutorials/82-use-pen-tool-photoshop.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>Here is a before and after preview of this tutorial:</p>
<p>Before</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1235" title="before" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/before-500x375.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>After</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1234" title="sunset-scene-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/sunset-scene-final-2-500x375.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>An alternative Version</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1239" title="sunset-scene-4" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/sunset-scene-4-500x375.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>OK let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Download a copy of <a href="http://www.stockvault.net/download_file2.php?pid=9798">this image</a> and load it into Photoshop. Duplicate the background layer Three Times as shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1213" title="1-duplicate1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/1-duplicate1.jpg" alt="" width="213" height="114" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending option for &#8220;Background copy&#8221;, &#8220;Background copy 2&#8243;, &#8220;Background copy 3&#8243; accordingly:</p>
<p>&#8220;Background copy&#8221; &#8211; Overlay</p>
<p>&#8220;Background copy&#8221; &#8211; Hard Light</p>
<p>&#8220;Background copy&#8221; &#8211; Color</p>
<p>And you will have the following image:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1215" title="2-effect-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2-effect-2-499x375.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="375" /></p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>Duplicate the Background once more and drag the duplicated layer on top of all other previous layers, apply the following Surfuce Blur settings to it:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1216" title="3-surface" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-surface.jpg" alt="" width="316" height="355" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending of this layer to &#8220;Screen&#8221; &#8211; this will add a glowing effect to the image.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1217" title="3-effect4" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-effect4-500x371.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="371" /></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Now we will seperate the sky bit from rest of the image so that we could edit it without affecting other part of the image.</p>
<p>To do this, hide all previously duplicate layers and go back to the background layer, use the Pen Tool to create a path around the sky portion of the image:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-pen-select.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1218" title="3-pen-select" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-pen-select-500x184.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="184" /></a></p>
<p>Then right-click and choose Make Selection, choose 0 px feather and this will transform the path into a selection:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1219" title="3-make-sel" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-make-sel-500x188.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="188" /></p>
<p>Then hit Ctrl + J to make a layer via copy, name it as &#8220;Sky&#8221; and Drag it above all other layers. (Optional: you can use the Clone Stamp Tool to refine the edges of the sky so it fits better with the landscape.)</p>
<p>Apply the following Channel Mixer image adjustment to the &#8220;Sky&#8221; layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1221" title="3-channel-mixer" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-channel-mixer.jpg" alt="" width="398" height="348" /></p>
<p>And the effect so far will look like this:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1222" title="3-effect-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/3-effect-2-500x375.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Now duplicate the &#8220;Sky&#8221; layer once, apply the following Gaussian Blur settings to the duplicate layer:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1223" title="4-gaussian1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-gaussian1.jpg" alt="" width="316" height="305" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending option to &#8220;Overlay&#8221; and this will add some extra softness to the cloud:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1224" title="4-cloud" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-cloud-500x199.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="199" /></p>
<p>Duplicate the &#8220;Sky&#8221; layer once more and drag this dupcliate layer on top of all other layers, load the selection of this layer by holding down Ctrl key + Left-click the thumbnail of this layer within the layer palette, fill it with colour shown below:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1225" title="4-fill" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-fill-500x373.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="373" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode to &#8220;color&#8221; and you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1226" title="4-effect4" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/4-effect4-500x164.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="164" /></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>Now we add some colour for the grass and the landscape as well. To do this, create a Gradient Map on top of all layers:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1227" title="5-gradient-map" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/5-gradient-map.jpg" alt="" width="223" height="198" /></p>
<p>and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1228" title="5-gradient-map-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/5-gradient-map-2.jpg" alt="" width="463" height="317" /></p>
<p>Change the layer blending mode of this adjustment layer to &#8220;Soft Light&#8221; and opacity to 80%. And you will have the following effect:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1229" title="5-effect4" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/5-effect4-500x346.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="346" /></p>
<h3>Step 6</h3>
<p>If you would like to add some more lighting and reduce the amount of the brightness of the sky a bit, you can go back to the origianl &#8220;Sky&#8221; layer, use the Eraser Tool with a big round brush and 0% hardness, erase to the parts you want:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1230" title="6-eraser" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/6-eraser-499x283.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="283" /></p>
<p>Here is the effect so far:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1232" title="6-effect4" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/6-effect4-500x373.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="373" /></p>
<p>Ok that&#8217;s it for this tutorial! The rest is again left upon your own creativity :)</p>
<p>Below is my final image for this tutorial: (Click to Enlarge)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1234" title="sunset-scene-final-2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/sunset-scene-final-2-500x375.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>An alternative version:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/sunset-scene-4.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1239" title="sunset-scene-4" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/sunset-scene-4-500x375.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>
<p>If you have any questions, just drop me a comment :)</p>
<p>Cheers and have a nice day!</p>

		</div>
<p>In this tutorial, I am going to show you the steps I took to create this awesome starry text effect in Photoshop. The inspiration of this text effect comes from the EA game &#8220;Dead Space&#8221;.</p>
<p>Together we will practice some brush techniques, layer blending options, selection techniques and applying various filter effects.</p>
<p>Below is a previous of the final result:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/starry-text-final.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-719" title="starry-text-final" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/starry-text-final-500x200.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>All right let&#8217;s get started!</p>
<h3>Step 1</h3>
<p>Create a new document sized 1000&#215;400px, you can adjust this ratio to suit your computer screen. Fill the Background layer with Black.</p>
<p>Choose a font you like, I use <a title="http://www.dafont.com/nasalization.font" href="http://www.dafont.com/nasalization.font">this font</a> from dafont.com. Type some texts onto the document and position the text as below:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/1-text-position3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-695" title="1-text-position3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/1-text-position3-499x200.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>Name this layer as &#8220;Text&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Step 2</h3>
<p>On the &#8220;Text&#8221; layer, apply the following layer blending options:</p>
<p>Inner Shadow</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-inner-shadow3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-696" title="2-inner-shadow3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-inner-shadow3-500x367.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="367" /></a></p>
<p>Outer Glow</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-outer-glow3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-697" title="2-outer-glow3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-outer-glow3-500x367.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="367" /></a></p>
<p>Inner Glow</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-inner-glow1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-698" title="2-inner-glow1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-inner-glow1-500x367.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="367" /></a></p>
<p>Bevel and Emboss</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-bevel-and-emboss.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-699" title="3-bevel-and-emboss" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-bevel-and-emboss-500x367.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="367" /></a></p>
<p>Gradient Overlay</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-grad-over.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-700" title="2-grad-over" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-grad-over-500x367.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="367" /></a></p>
<p>Stroke</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-stroke.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-701" title="2-stroke" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-stroke-500x367.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="367" /></a></p>
<p>This effect so far will look like this:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-effect-so-far5.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-702" title="2-effect-so-far5" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2-effect-so-far5-500x201.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="201" /></a></p>
<h3>Step 3</h3>
<p>Ok here comes the tricky bit :)</p>
<p>Use Ctrl +  Left Mouse Click the select the text, then create a new layer on top of the &#8220;Text&#8221; Layer and call this layer &#8220;Star&#8221;. Fill the &#8220;Star&#8221; layer with Black colour and position it according to the image below:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-resize1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-706" title="3-resize1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-resize1-500x200.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="200" /></a></p>
<p>Keep the selection alive and go to Filter &gt; Noise &gt; Add Noise and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-noise1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-707" title="3-noise1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-noise1.jpg" alt="" width="322" height="418" /></a></p>
<p>Optional: if you feel there is way too many star/noise, hit Ctrl + L to bring up the Level Adjustment Tool and apply the following settings:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-level.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-708" title="3-level" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-level.jpg" alt="" width="405" height="330" /></a></p>
<p>When you finish everything with the &#8220;Star Layer&#8221;, change the layer blending option to &#8220;Soft Light&#8221; and you will have the following image:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-effect-so-far2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-709" title="3-effect-so-far2" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/3-effect-so-far2-499x201.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="201" /></a></p>
<h3>Step 4</h3>
<p>Create a new layer and name it &#8220;Star 2&#8243;, grab a 9px round soft brush and apply the following brush settings:</p>
<p>Shape Dynamics</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-shape-dyn.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-710" title="4-shape-dyn" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-shape-dyn.jpg" alt="" width="382" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>Scattering</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-scatter.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-711" title="4-scatter" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-scatter.jpg" alt="" width="382" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>Texture</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-texture.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-712" title="4-texture" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-texture.jpg" alt="" width="382" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>Dual Brush</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-dual-brush.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-713" title="4-dual-brush" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-dual-brush.jpg" alt="" width="382" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>After applying the brush settings, use it to paint gently over the text (see below image):</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-effect-so-far3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-714" title="4-effect-so-far3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/4-effect-so-far3-499x199.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="199" /></a></p>
<h3>Step 5</h3>
<p>Now we&#8217;re gonna add some nebula effect on the text.</p>
<p>To do this, create a new layer and name it &#8220;Nebula&#8221;, use the Lasso Tool with a 20px feather, select the surrounding area of the text (Tip: you can hold down the &#8220;Shift&#8221; Key while selecting and this will add to your existing selection)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/5-select1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-716" title="5-select1" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/5-select1-499x199.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="199" /></a></p>
<p>Fill the selection with black colour. Go to Filter &gt; Render &gt; Cloud (choose white as foreground colour and black as background colour) and render some cloud.</p>
<p>Then hit Ctrl + L to bring up the level tool again, apply the following settings:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/5-level.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-717" title="5-level" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/5-level.jpg" alt="" width="405" height="330" /></a></p>
<p>Drag the &#8220;Nebula&#8221; layer below all previous layers (but above the background layer) and set its fill opacity to around 80%.</p>
<p>The effect so far looks like:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/5-effect-so-far3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-718" title="5-effect-so-far3" src="http://www.psdvault.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/5-effect-so-far3-499x201.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="201" /></a></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it for this tutorial! The rest is left upon your own creativity! You can add some more textures in, or create another layer with some colour over it. That&#8217;s totally up to you!</p>
<p>Below is my final image for this tutorial:</p>
